Somali Forces Kill Over 22 al-Shabaab Militants
(MENAFN) The Somali National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) announced on Saturday that it executed twin operations targeting the al-Shabaab terrorist organization in central Somalia, eliminating more than 22 militants.
The initial operation, conducted in the Dumaye area of the Mudug region, focused on high-ranking members of the group, resulting in the deaths of 15 insurgents, including four senior figures, according to NISA.
The second mission in the South-Central Hiran region targeted two residences harboring militants, killing around seven individuals, including two principal financial leaders of al-Shabaab.
“These operations resulted in the killing of more than 22 conspirators who were engaged in organizing attempts against the security of the Somali people,” stated NISA.
The agency emphasized that it has intensified efforts to dismantle the group’s presence and “clear their remnants from all areas where they hide.”
Al-Shabaab has waged an insurgency against the Somali government for over 16 years, frequently attacking security personnel, officials, and civilians.
Since last July, Somali forces, backed by the AUSSOM (African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia) and other international allies, have escalated operations targeting the militants supporting the central government.
The UN Security Council renewed AUSSOM’s mandate for an additional year in December, with a UK-supported resolution extending authorization until December 31.
