Iran Dismisses Damage from US Strike on Kharg Island
(MENAFN) Iran reported early Saturday that a recent US strike on its strategically important Kharg Island did not damage the island’s oil infrastructure, while issuing a warning that any attacks on its facilities could prompt retaliatory strikes against US energy assets in the region, according to reports.
A spokesperson for Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters stated that assaults on the country’s oil, economic, or energy infrastructure would trigger the destruction of “all corresponding US facilities in the region.”
Reports indicated that the US airstrikes primarily targeted military installations, including air defense systems, a naval base, and airport facilities. The strikes reportedly caused over 15 explosions and thick plumes of smoke but left the island’s oil export infrastructure untouched.
US President Donald Trump previously stated that the US had eliminated all military targets on Kharg Island and warned that its oil facilities could be targeted if Iran continued to obstruct shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Kharg Island serves as Iran’s primary hub for oil exports, handling an estimated 90%–95% of the country’s crude shipments, roughly 1.7 million barrels per day last year. The island is a critical part of Iran’s energy network and a significant source of government revenue.
