Alzeben Takes His Experience To Arab League

(MENAFN- Brazil-Arab News Agency (ANBA)) São Paulo – Since mid-November last year, the new face of the Arab League in Brazil has been Ibrahim Alzeben. Known in Brazil as a voice advocating for Palestine, the country he represented as ambassador in Brasília for nearly 18 years, the diplomat now brings the experience he accumulated in diplomacy across Latin America to the Arab League Mission in Brazil, which he now heads.

This Friday (13), during his first visit in the new role to the headquarters of the Arab-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce (ABCC ) in São Paulo, Alzeben told ANBA that at the Arab League he will continue the work of his predecessors and work to further deepen relations between Brazil and the Arab countries.

“I am continuing this relationship that several colleagues worked very well on during their terms as representatives of the Arab League,” he said. Alzeben said he received from the Arab League's secretary-general, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, and the organization's assistant secretary-general, Hossam Zaki, the task of strengthening relations with Brazil and other countries in Latin America. The diplomat says he is honored to lead the Arab League mission in Brazil.

As early as next April, the Arab League's engagement with the Brazilian government will intensify with a political consultation meeting. The most recent one took place in Cairo, Egypt, in 2025, and the next will be held in Brasília, with the presence of a delegation from the Arab organization. Political consultation meetings are high-level diplomatic gatherings between representatives of countries or between a country and an organization to exchange information, align positions and strengthen cooperation on bilateral, regional and global issues.

In the political context, Alzeben recalled Brazil's support for Arab causes.“The support of the Brazilian government and of Brazil in general for the Palestinian cause is very clear, the truly honorable stance of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, both at the popular level and at the official level. It is very much appreciated and a courageous position that we greatly admire,” said the new head of the Arab League Mission in Brazil.

The Arab League is headquartered in Cairo and brings together the 22 Arab countries.“The League of Arab States has played a very important role in coordination among all Arab countries since its founding in 1945,” Alzeben explains.

On March 22, the organization will mark its 81st anniversary, but due to the current situation in the Middle East, with the conflict between the United States and Israel and Iran affecting Arab countries in the region, Alzeben will hold a press conference with journalists instead of a celebration. He says he hopes the war will end soon.

Economic cooperation

The diplomat says his work at the Arab League will be political and cultural but will also involve helping foster economic and financial ties between Brazil and the Arab countries.“Within our limitations as an international organization and not as a country,” he said. Alzeben notes that the Arab countries are Brazil's third-largest trading partner and that annual trade between them totals USD 33 billion.

The diplomat recalls that economic cooperation between Brazil and the Arab countries is already increasing but says he will work together with the Arab diplomatic missions in Brazil-Brasília currently hosts 18 of them-to further expand this exchange.

He believes the network of relationships he has built with several Latin American countries can help in his mission at the Arab League. Alzeben also served as dean of the Council of Arab Ambassadors in Brazil.“I ask God to grant me health, strength and energy so I can fulfill this mission,” he said.

Alzeben visited the ABCC with the new Palestinian ambassador to Brazil, Marwan Jebril. They were received by ABCC President William Adib Dib Jr., Secretary-General & International Relations Vice President Mohamad Orra Mourad, Marketing Vice President Silvia Antibas. Treasurer Mohamad Abdouni Neto, board members Sami Roumieh and William Atui, Institutional Relations Advisor Bassel Abou Latif, and Corporate and Institutional Services Coordinator Ana Cristina Oliveira.
