Dr Katayoun Shahandeh is a lecturer and Senior Teaching Fellow at SOAS, University of London.

She is the convenor for the MA modules, "Theory and Method in Art History" and "Contemporary Art and the Global" as well as the BA module "Decolonising the Arts". Additionally she is the convenor for the module "Analysing and Exploring the Museum" (PG Diploma in Museum Studies).

She has presented papers at numerous national and international conferences and universities and has also organised many conferences and talks. She earned her PhD in History of Art and Archaeology from SOAS, University of London, with a thesis titled“Reimagining the Feminine Self: Strategies of Subversion in the Works of Contemporary Iranian Female Artists”. She also holds a Combined Honours BA in Philosophy and History of Art from UCL and an MA in History of Art and Archaeology from SOAS.

Her doctoral research and subsequent work have provided her with a deep understanding of global frameworks and strategies of display, with a particular focus on modern and contemporary art, as well as feminist and decolonial art histories.

Dr Shahandeh's academic interests encompass non-Western art, history, and society, with a particular focus on Iran. Her work engages with feminist art histories, gender studies, postcolonial theory, and strategies of display. She critically examines the intersections of gender and cultural identity in non-Western artistic contexts and investigates the lasting impact of colonial legacies on cultural expression and exhibition practices.

Committed to addressing issues affecting underrepresented communities, her research seeks to amplify marginalized voices, expanding discourse on non-Western art and gender dynamics.
