China is Disappointed of UN Security Council Failure to Pass Mideast Resolution

(MENAFN) China expressed disappointment after the United Nations Security Council failed to approve a Russia-backed draft resolution mourning the “tragic loss of life throughout the ongoing hostilities” in the Middle East, according to reports.

China’s permanent representative to the UN, Fu Cong, said the resolution reaffirmed the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and called on all parties to cease military operations. The draft also condemned attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure and encouraged a return to diplomatic negotiations, he noted.

“China welcomes and supports this, and was disappointed and regretful that the draft resolution was not adopted,” Fu said.

The resolution, introduced by Russia, received four votes in favor—Russia, China, Somalia, and Pakistan—while the United States and Latvia voted against it. Nine countries abstained, including the United Kingdom, France, Bahrain, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Denmark, Greece, Liberia, and Panama.
