Lavrov Engages with Iran, SA to De-Escalate Middle East Tensions
(MENAFN) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held talks on Tuesday with his Iranian and Saudi counterparts regarding the escalating conflict in the Middle East, as stated by reports.
Following his call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, the Russian Foreign Ministry noted that the situation “sharply deteriorated as a result of the unprovoked aggression of the US and Israel against Iran.” Lavrov reportedly reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to supporting a rapid de-escalation and returning the crisis to a political-diplomatic resolution while taking into account the security interests of Iran and neighboring countries.
Later, Lavrov spoke with Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan, with both sides emphasizing the need to “immediately cease all military action and abandon the use of force to resolve the conflict.” They also underscored the importance of consolidating
international efforts to quickly reduce military and political tensions and prevent further deterioration in the region.
These discussions occurred shortly after a call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov noted that Putin had proposed various options for Russian mediation from the outset of the crisis to help lower tensions in the Middle East.
