Russia Warns of Energy Collapse in Europe Amid Middle East Crisis
(MENAFN) A Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson has cautioned that countries in Western and Central Europe may face an energy collapse due to escalating tensions in the Middle East and disruptions to global energy supply chains, according to reports.
“It seems to me that the most relevant issue now is not even the situation around Ukraine, but the collapse that is engulfing the countries of Western and Central Europe in connection with the crisis in the Middle East. Energy prices have skyrocketed -- both gas and oil,” Maria Zakharova stated in an interview on Friday.
Zakharova noted that the European Union’s self-imposed ban on Russian energy imports raises pressing questions about alternative fuel sources for member states. Earlier in the week, Russian President Vladimir Putin hinted at the possibility of Russia fully withdrawing from the European natural gas market.
The intensifying Middle East conflict has caused near-total disruption of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for global oil and natural gas shipments.
Despite these developments, EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen reportedly told media outlets that the EU does not currently consider the situation a full-scale energy crisis. He added, however, that if the Middle East tensions continue, the bloc may instruct member nations to reduce energy consumption.
