Azerbaijan Thwarts Claimed IRGC Plots
(MENAFN) Azerbaijan reported on Friday that it had prevented “provocations and intelligence gathering” efforts by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) branch"], according to media sources.
Citing the Azerbaijani State Security Service, state broadcaster AzTV said the plots were stopped “as a result of complex counterintelligence measures.” The schemes reportedly aimed to create public panic and damage Azerbaijan’s international reputation, with targets including the Baku-Ceyhan oil pipeline.
“Three explosive devices were placed on the territory of the country. These explosives were neutralized and prevented from being transferred to other persons,” the report added.
The allegations follow an incident on Thursday in which Azerbaijan said its Nakhchivan exclave was struck by drones from Iranian territory, injuring four people and damaging the region’s international airport.
President Ilham Aliyev labeled the attack a "terrorist act," demanding an explanation from Iranian authorities, a formal apology, and that the perpetrators be held criminally responsible.
Iran has denied launching any projectiles toward Azerbaijan, stating during a call between Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov that its armed forces were conducting an investigation.
