UK Police Say Russian Intelligence Is Linked to Europe-Wide Cargo Fires

(MENAFN) UK authorities reported on Friday that an international probe has pointed to possible Russian military intelligence involvement in a series of cargo fires affecting air freight across Europe since 2024.

Investigators from Lithuania, Poland, the UK, Germany, and the Netherlands collaborated through Eurojust—the EU’s criminal justice agency—to share evidence related to the incidents, according to reports.

Counter Terrorism Policing London took the lead after a package ignited at a depot in Minworth, Birmingham, on July 22, 2024. Detectives subsequently linked the incident to other cargo fires across Europe.

A 38-year-old Romanian man was arrested on March 19, 2025, on suspicion of assisting a foreign intelligence service under the National Security Act 2023, Section 3. He was later released but remains under investigation.

Authorities said that current findings suggest involvement by Russian military intelligence.

Investigators continue coordinating closely with European partners, the Crown Prosecution Service, and the affected freight carriers.
