Japan Calls on US to Refrain from Raising Tariffs
(MENAFN) Japan requested that the United States avoid increasing tariffs before Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s upcoming meeting with President Donald Trump later this month, domestic media reported Saturday.
During discussions in Washington on Friday with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Japan’s economy, trade, and industry minister Ryosei Akazawa appealed to the US not to place higher duties on Japanese products than those settled last year, according to a news agency.
Addressing journalists after the two-hour session, Akazawa explained that the conversation also involved collaborative investment initiatives and partnership in vital sectors such as energy, critical minerals, and artificial intelligence.
The negotiations precede a scheduled March 19 meeting at the White House between Takaichi and Trump.
The tariff matter resurfaced last month after the US Supreme Court invalidated Trump’s broad global tariff policy, prompting Trump to promptly declare a new worldwide tariff level of 10% on most imports — with a proposed rise to 15% — using a separate authority.
Akazawa stated that he requested the United States not enforce the higher tariffs on Japanese imports, referring to the agreement the two nations achieved last July.
Under that arrangement, Japan committed to investing roughly $550 billion in strategic sectors within the United States in return for lower tariffs.
