Putin Confirms Russia’s Position on Mideast During Call with Pezeshkian

(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin reaffirmed Russia’s position regarding the growing tensions in the Middle East during a telephone conversation on Friday with Masoud Pezeshkian, the president of Iran, according to reports.

A statement issued by the Kremlin indicated that Putin also offered condolences following the death of Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, along with several members of his family and senior military officials.

“Russia's principled position on the need for an immediate cessation of hostilities, the abandonment of forceful solutions to problems around Iran and throughout the Middle East, and a swift return to the path of political and diplomatic resolution was reaffirmed,” the statement said.

According to the statement, the Russian leader has been maintaining ongoing communication with leaders from countries belonging to the Gulf Cooperation Council.

For his part, Pezeshkian thanked Moscow for its support, expressing appreciation for Russia’s stance.

“Russia's ‘solidarity with the Iranian people defending the sovereignty and independence of their homeland.’”

Reports added that the Iranian president also briefed Putin extensively on the latest developments as tensions continue to rise in the region. Both sides agreed to stay in contact through “various channels.”

The regional situation has sharply deteriorated since the United States and Israel carried out extensive strikes against Iran last Saturday. The attacks reportedly resulted in hundreds of deaths, including that of the Iranian supreme leader and several high-ranking military figures.

In response, Tehran launched drone and missile attacks targeting Israel as well as several Gulf nations that host American military assets, further intensifying tensions across the region.
