Drone Intercepted Near Baghdad Airport in Iraq
(MENAFN) Iraqi authorities announced Tuesday that a drone was intercepted and destroyed near Baghdad International Airport, escaping without casualties or material damage, as aerial threats multiplied across the country amid surging regional tensions.
The Iraqi Security Media Cell confirmed the intercept in a statement carried by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), saying the unmanned aircraft was neutralized at the outer edges of the airport's perimeter. Lt. Gen. Saad Maan, head of the cell, described the aircraft as a small drone and confirmed no losses of any kind were sustained.
No additional details were immediately made available.
The Baghdad intercept followed earlier explosions reported in Erbil, the capital of northern Iraq's Kurdistan region, where a drone attack targeted the US Consulate and the city's airport. Air defense systems were activated in response and drones were intercepted, though authorities did not immediately confirm the total number of aircraft involved.
The dual incidents reflect a rapidly deteriorating security environment across Iraq, which has been drawn into the widening regional fallout since US and Israeli forces launched sweeping strikes against Iran on Saturday — an offensive that has killed nearly 800 people to date.
Tehran has retaliated with an expansive campaign of drone and missile strikes directed at Israel and Gulf states hosting US military assets, with the attacks now increasingly reaching Iraqi territory and threatening critical civilian and diplomatic infrastructure.
