South Korea, Philippines Expand Partnership Across AI, Defense, Energy

(MENAFN) South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. formalized several memoranda of understanding (MoUs) on Tuesday aimed at enhancing collaboration across multiple sectors, including artificial intelligence (AI), nuclear energy, and defense, as stated by reports.

Marcos welcomed Lee to Manila for discussions while the Philippines serves as this year’s chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), with Seoul looking to deepen its engagement with the region.

During their talks, Lee emphasized the significance of broadening bilateral relations beyond traditional trade and investment into emerging areas in light of shifting global dynamics, according to reports.

"The two countries have developed cooperative relations in various areas, including trade, investment, the defense industry, infrastructure, and development and now stand on the threshold of expanding the scope of cooperation," Lee said.

He also highlighted promising fields for joint efforts: "Promising areas, including AI, digital technology, green energy, shipbuilding, and the culture industry, are fields where both countries can work together."

South Korea remains a major economic partner for the Philippines, supported by a bilateral free trade agreement that took effect in 2024.

In a joint press statement, Lee noted that both governments have agreed to bolster practical collaboration specifically in nuclear energy and critical minerals.

"The two countries will be valuable partners in tackling challenges amid an era of geopolitical uncertainty and intense global technological competition," he said.
