US Envoy Warns Iran Has “Unlimited Capacity” to Enrich Uranium

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, stated Tuesday that Iran possesses “an unlimited capacity” to enrich uranium, calling attempts to halt its program “almost impossible.”

Speaking on Fox News, Witkoff addressed the ongoing US and Israeli strikes against Iran. He said that during negotiations, Iranian officials insisted they had an “inalienable right” to enrich nuclear fuel, while the US argued it had an equally “inalienable right” to prevent such enrichment.

Witkoff noted that the US had offered to supply Iran with nuclear fuel for ten years if Tehran paused enrichment during that period, but the offer was rejected. He suggested this refusal indicates that Iran’s enrichment program may be aimed at developing nuclear weapons.

He claimed Iran currently possesses roughly 10,000 kilograms of fissile material, including around 460 kilograms enriched to 60 percent purity and about 1,000 kilograms enriched to 20 percent purity.

“They produce their own centrifuges to enrich this material,” Witkoff said, adding: “Stopping them is nearly impossible. They have an unlimited resource.”

He further explained that uranium enriched to 60 percent could be raised to weapons-grade (90 percent) within about a week to ten days, while 20 percent-enriched material could reach weapons-grade within three to four weeks.
