Paul Humphries

• Associate Professor in Ecology, Charles Sturt University

My research interests mostly relate to rivers and their ecology. Whilst I have worked mostly on fish-related topics, I also have an interest in macroinvertebrates and macrophytes. Most of my work in the last ten years or so has been on the relationship between riverine biota and flow.

Since late 2004, I have studied aspects of the recruitment of fish, especially in relation to the timing of spawning, and associated environomental conditions.

I have also carried out several projects, with students and collaborators in Austria, on retention and dispersal of the young stages of fish and shrimp in rivers.

In the last few years, I have also developed a strong interest in historical ecology, especially in the Murray-Darling Basin. I am currently involved with several palaeoecological and zooarchaeological projects, which aim to look at past faunas and ecosystems in the Murray River region of Australia, to aid conservation and management of our rivers.
