Nvidia Invests USD4B in Two US Photonics Firms

(MENAFN) US chipmaker Nvidia announced on Monday that it will invest a total of $4 billion in two American photonics companies, aiming to strengthen its research and development pipeline and secure the supply chain for the next generation of AI data centers.

The company will invest $2 billion each in Lumentum and Coherent, both of which specialize in optics and photonics—technologies that generate, shape, and transmit light for ultra-fast data movement and sensing. Lumentum focuses on optical and photonic solutions for AI, cloud infrastructure, and modern communication systems, while Coherent develops photonics components and systems for high-performance optical applications.

Nvidia described the investments as part of its push to integrate advanced “silicon photonics” into large-scale AI infrastructure, supporting the development of next-generation, energy-intensive AI computing facilities. CEO Jensen Huang said the partnership with Lumentum includes a multi-year purchasing commitment and secured production capacity for advanced laser components. Nvidia will also work with Coherent to design next-generation silicon photonics tailored to AI infrastructure needs.
