Peel Police Probe Disappearance Of Afghan Diplomat's Wife As Homicide

(MENAFN- Khaama Press) Peel police are investigating the 2022 disappearance of an Afghan diplomat's wife in Mississauga as a homicide, identifying one suspect.

Peel Regional Police have reclassified the disappearance of Mezhgan Aini, the wife of a former United Nations diplomat, as a homicide investigation nearly four years after she was last seen in Mississauga.

Police announced Monday that Aini, 38, also known as“Sara,” was last seen in June 2022. Her family in Afghanistan reportedly lost contact with her and formally reported her missing to Canadian authorities in June 2025.

Investigators said a suspect has been identified in the case but declined to release further details, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.

Aini immigrated to Canada in 2017 with her three children and her husband, Mohammad Yama Aini, who previously worked with the United Nations.

Mohammad Yama Aini had earlier faced investigation over allegations of serious assault and was dismissed from his UN position, though no formal criminal charges were laid against him.

Authorities have not confirmed whether the identified suspect is known to the victim, and no arrests have been publicly announced.

Mississauga, located in Ontario, is home to a large immigrant community, including Afghan families who resettled in Canada following years of conflict. Cases involving long-term missing persons are often reassessed as new information emerges.

Canadian law enforcement agencies periodically review unresolved disappearances, and when evidence suggests criminal involvement, cases may be upgraded to homicide investigations even in the absence of recovered remains.
