South Sudan Attack Leaves Over 169 Dead
(MENAFN) More than 169 people have been killed and at least 68 others wounded after armed youth launched a deadly assault on Abiemnom County in the Ruweng Administrative Area of South Sudan, a senior government official confirmed Monday.
Minister of Information, Communication Technology and Postal Services Ateny Wek Ateny said Sunday's attack claimed both civilian lives and members of law enforcement, with local leadership figures among those confirmed dead.
"Following the attack, the Government has confirmed the killing of the County Commissioner of Awarpiny, alongside the Executive Director of Abiemnom County. We also received reports of over 169 people having been killed, and more than 68 wounded," Ateny said in an official statement.
Juba issued a sharp condemnation of the bloodshed, denouncing those responsible in unequivocal terms. "The Government of the Republic of South Sudan strongly condemns this heinous and cowardly act of violence against innocent citizens and public officials. Such actions undermine peace, stability, and ongoing efforts toward reconciliation and national unity," the statement read.
Ateny confirmed that security forces have since been mobilized to the area with orders to restore order, conduct a full investigation, and ensure perpetrators face justice.
The massacre marks one of the deadliest single incidents of communal violence recorded in South Sudan in recent months, dealing a severe blow to fragile reconciliation efforts in a nation still scarred by years of civil war.
