Saudi Arabia States It Intercepted Attacks on Ras Tanura Oil Refinery

(MENAFN) Saudi authorities announced on Monday that they successfully intercepted drones attempting to strike the Ras Tanura oil refinery, operated by state-owned Aramco, according to reports citing the Defense Ministry.

"Two drones attempting to attack the Ras Tanura refinery this morning were intercepted and destroyed," a ministry spokesperson said.

The official noted that “a limited fire resulted from falling shrapnel during the interception operation, with no civilian casualties.” They added that the interception caused debris to fall near civilians and civilian infrastructure.

The incident comes amid a joint US-Israeli military campaign launched on Saturday against Iran, which reportedly killed several senior Iranian officials, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In retaliation, Tehran carried out drone and missile strikes targeting Israel as well as Gulf countries hosting US assets. Some reports indicated that operations at the Ras Tanura refinery were temporarily halted following the attempted attack.
