Maersk Suspends Ship Crossings in Strait of Hormuz
(MENAFN) Danish shipping company Maersk announced on Sunday that it is halting vessel crossings in the Strait of Hormuz due to security concerns following US and Israeli strikes on Iran.
In a statement, Maersk said the safety of crews, vessels, and cargo remains its top priority, and all crossings through the strait will be suspended until further notice. The company also plans to reroute shipments between the Middle East and the Mediterranean, as well as the Middle East and the US East Coast, via the Cape of Good Hope.
Meanwhile, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) suspended all bookings for cargo to the Middle East until further notice.
The move comes after Iran confirmed the deaths of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several top officials in US-Israeli attacks. Tehran has responded with missile and drone strikes, and reports indicate the Strait of Hormuz has been effectively closed.
Washington and Tel Aviv cite concerns over Iran’s nuclear and missile programs, while Iran maintains its nuclear activities are peaceful.
