Erdogan, EU's Von der Leyen Hold Phone Talks Amid Iran Crisis
(MENAFN) Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan held a phone call with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Sunday, addressing the escalating regional fallout triggered by recent strikes on Iran, the Türkiye Directorate of Communications confirmed.
During the conversation, Erdogan urged all parties to return to diplomacy and dialogue, stressing readiness to provide all kinds of support for the peace process.
The Turkish president further emphasized that close coordination between Türkiye and the EU would be critical as the crisis continues to unfold across the region.
The call came one day after Washington and Tel Aviv launched a sweeping military assault on Iran on Saturday, killing several senior Iranian officials — among them Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Tehran responded swiftly with waves of drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, U.S. military assets, and multiple Gulf states.
The attack bears striking resemblance to a prior joint Israeli-American offensive against Iran in June of last year — a strike that ignited a 12-day armed conflict before both sides agreed to a ceasefire, temporarily halting hostilities.
Regional leaders and international observers are now closely watching diplomatic channels for signs of de-escalation as tensions across the Middle East reach a critical threshold.
