Erdogan, Trump Hold Phone Talks on Developments in Middle East
(MENAFN) Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan held a direct phone conversation with US President Donald Trump Sunday to address fast-moving developments across the Middle East, including the latest military strikes against Iran, a Turkish official confirmed.
"The latest situation and current developments in Iran and the Gulf countries," were discussed by the two leaders, Turkish Communications Director Burhanettin Duran wrote Sunday on US social media company X.
The high-level exchange comes as Ankara intensifies its diplomatic push to contain regional fallout and steer all parties back toward dialogue, with the crisis drawing mounting concern from the international community.
Washington and Tel Aviv launched coordinated strikes on Tehran in the early hours of Saturday — a move that blindsided observers, arriving in the middle of ongoing nuclear negotiations brokered through Oman's mediation. The most recent round of those talks in Geneva had concluded just days earlier on Thursday, making the timing of the assault all the more striking.
This marks the second time the US has targeted Iranian nuclear infrastructure in under a year. During a 12-day war between Israel and Iran last June, American forces struck three Iranian nuclear sites — a campaign that drew widespread global condemnation and deepened fears over the long-term stability of the region.
