Erdogan Holds Call with EU Chief on Escalation Following Iran Strikes

(MENAFN) Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan holds a phone conversation on Sunday with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to discuss recent attacks on Iran and the rising tensions across the region, according to statements cited by reports from Türkiye’s Directorate of Communications.

During the call, Erdogan stresses the need for all parties to return to diplomacy and dialogue, affirming Türkiye’s readiness to provide comprehensive support for the peace process. He also highlights the importance of close coordination between Türkiye and the EU throughout these efforts.

The discussion comes after a US and Israeli strike on Iran on Saturday, which kills several senior Iranian officials, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Tehran responds with drone and missile attacks targeting Israel, US positions, and multiple Gulf nations.

The leaders also reflect on a similar US-Israeli operation against Iran last June, which escalated into a 12-day conflict before ending with a ceasefire.
