Attack on Oil Tanker Off Oman Coast Leaves Four Injured
(MENAFN) Four crew members were wounded Sunday after an oil tanker flying a Palau flag came under attack north of Khasab Port in Oman, the country's Maritime Security Center confirmed, as maritime tensions surge alongside the broader regional military conflict.
In an official statement, the center disclosed that the SKYLIGHT tanker was struck approximately five nautical miles north of the port, within the Musandam Governorate — a strategically vital stretch of water bordering the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of the world's oil supply flows.
"All 20 crew members, including 15 Indian nationals and 5 Iranian nationals, were evacuated," the center said, confirming the full crew had been safely removed from the stricken vessel.
According to the statement, four crew members sustained injuries of varying severity and were transferred to receive medical attention.
The Maritime Security Center stopped short of attributing responsibility for the assault, offering no indication of who carried out the strike.
The incident unfolds against an increasingly volatile regional backdrop. US and Israeli forces launched a large-scale military offensive against Iran on Saturday, triggering retaliatory waves of missile and drone strikes from Tehran across multiple Gulf states.
The crisis escalated further on Sunday when Iran officially confirmed the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several senior officials, killed in the joint Israeli and US strikes — a watershed moment whose destabilizing implications for regional maritime security and global energy markets are only beginning to emerge.
