U.S. Embassy in Oman Orders Nationals to Take Immediate Shelter

(MENAFN) The United States Embassy in Oman ordered all American personnel and nationals in the Gulf nation to take immediate shelter on Sunday, as retaliatory drone strikes rippled across the region following a joint US-Israeli military assault on Iran.

"Due to ongoing activity outside of Muscat, the US Embassy in Oman has instructed staff to shelter-in-place (i.e., take cover)," the embassy said in a statement.

"We recommend all Americans in Oman do the same until further notice," it added.

The emergency directive came as Tehran launched waves of drone strikes targeting multiple Gulf states, including Oman, in direct retaliation for Saturday's American and Israeli strikes on Iranian soil — a dramatic escalation that has sent shockwaves across the broader Middle East.

The warning carries particular geopolitical weight given Muscat's unique diplomatic role. Oman has long served as a back-channel mediator in indirect nuclear negotiations between Washington and Tehran, making it one of the few Gulf nations to maintain open lines of communication with the Iranian government.

The crisis deepened further on Sunday when Iran confirmed the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei alongside several senior officials, killed in the Israeli and US strikes — a development with potentially profound consequences for regional stability and the future of the Iranian regime.
