US Opens Probe into Reported Exchange of Fire Close to Cuba

(MENAFN) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced Wednesday that American authorities are investigating a reported incident off the coast of Cuba involving a Florida-registered speedboat. He emphasized that Washington will independently verify information provided by Cuban officials.

Speaking during a Caribbean leaders’ summit in Saint Kitts and Nevis, Rubio said US officials were notified of the event by Havana earlier in the day and immediately began reviewing the circumstances.

“As it stands now, the Department of Homeland Security, the Coast Guard and others are involved,” he said, noting that much of the information currently available had been supplied by Cuban authorities.

Rubio added that the US Embassy in Havana is working to determine whether those on board the vessel are American citizens or permanent residents and is seeking access to the individuals involved.

“According to the Cuban regime, the boat was registered in Florida. We’re tracking that down,” he said, noting that US officials expect to obtain additional details soon. He stressed that Washington will not rely solely on Cuba’s account of the incident.
