Venezuelan Leader Citizens are Welcome to Come Back to Country
(MENAFN) Venezuela’s interim president, Delcy Rodriguez, has said that Venezuelans living abroad are welcome to return following a newly passed amnesty law, as authorities continue to release prisoners under its provisions, according to reports.
In a televised address, Rodriguez stated, "I am telling you: the doors of Venezuela, the arms of the Venezuelan people, are open to those who want to return in this process of healing from hatred."
An estimated seven million Venezuelans have fled the country amid ongoing political and economic crises, including many opposition figures living in exile.
On Monday, at least 30 inmates were released from the Rodeo I penitentiary east of Caracas, greeted with joyous reunions by relatives. Scenes at the prison included prisoners with shaved heads shouting "We are free!" as they exited, ending months of anguish for their families. Luis Viera, who had been imprisoned for 13 months, said, "We are completely free, without any restrictions."
At the same time, Venezuelan authorities are pushing for the release of former President Nicolas Maduro, who remains jailed in the United States. Addressing the UN Human Rights Council, Foreign Minister Yvan Gil Pinto called for the immediate release of the former president. Maduro was captured in a U.S. raid on 3 January and is currently in New York with his wife awaiting trial on drug trafficking charges.
