EU Car Registrations in EU Decline in January
(MENAFN) New car registrations in the European Union fell by 3.9% year-on-year in January, marking a second consecutive challenging start to 2026, the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) reported Tuesday.
Battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) continued to gain ground, reaching a 19.3% market share, up from 14.9% in January 2025. In contrast, petrol and diesel cars together accounted for 30.1% of registrations, down from 39.5% a year earlier.
Hybrid-electric vehicles remain the most popular powertrain among buyers, with plug-in hybrids strengthening their position, highlighting the importance of a technology-neutral approach to decarbonization.
Sales of BEVs saw strong growth in some markets, rising 52.1% in France and 23.8% in Germany, while registrations fell sharply by 35.4% in the Netherlands and 11.5% in Belgium. Overall, 154,230 new battery-electric cars were registered in January, while petrol car registrations dropped 28.2%.
