US Imposes High Tariffs on Solar Imports from India, Indonesia, and Laos
(MENAFN) The US has announced steep new tariffs on solar cells and panels imported from India, Indonesia, and Laos to protect domestic manufacturers.
The US Commerce Department set preliminary duties Tuesday after accusing these countries of unfairly subsidizing local producers. Indian solar imports will face a 126% tariff, Indonesian shipments 86%–143%, and Laos 81%, according to Bloomberg.
The decision follows a demand from the Alliance for American Solar Manufacturing and Trade for an investigation to safeguard US industry. An ongoing antidumping duty probe is also being conducted on solar cells from the three nations.
India, Indonesia, and Laos accounted for $4.5 billion in US solar imports, nearly two-thirds of total imports. Solar imports from India alone jumped from $83.86 million in 2022 to $792.6 million in 2024, with the three nations representing 57% of US solar module imports in the first half of 2025.
Citi warned that the new tariffs will likely make the US market largely unviable for Indian manufacturers. These tariffs differ from the 10% tariffs announced by former President Donald Trump in 2024, which were mostly invalidated by the Supreme Court for exceeding executive authority under the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act.
