Mexican President Considers Lawsuit Against Elon Musk

(MENAFN) Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum is reportedly weighing a lawsuit against billionaire Elon Musk after he claimed she is controlled by drug cartels. The remarks followed Mexico’s announcement of the killing of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

Musk made the comments in response to a 2025 statement by Sheinbaum, in which she rejected an all-out war on cartels, saying: “Returning to the war against the narco is not an option… it is permission to kill without any trial.” Musk alleged that she was “saying what her cartel bosses tell her to say,” adding that “their punishment for disobedience is a little worse than a ‘performance improvement plan.’”

Speaking to reporters Tuesday, Sheinbaum called the claims “absurd” and “laughable,” and said she is “considering whether to take legal action” while her lawyers review the matter. The Mexican leader has faced criticism over national security policies amid a recent surge in violence.
