Drone Strikes on Sudan’s Front Line Cause Rising Civilian Casualties

(MENAFN) A surge in drone strikes along Sudan’s newest battlefront is causing mounting civilian deaths and increasingly influencing the trajectory of the country’s civil war, according to reports.

In recent weeks, the center of hostilities has shifted toward the south-central Kordofan region, as rival forces consolidate positions in other key war zones nearly three years into the conflict. Fighting between the Sudanese regular army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has become one of Africa’s most lethal crises for civilians, with no clear signs of de-escalation despite ongoing US-led diplomatic initiatives.

Drone attacks, now occurring almost daily, have struck markets, medical facilities, humanitarian convoys, and residential neighborhoods throughout Kordofan. The pattern of strikes has drawn strong criticism from UN and humanitarian officials.

"The continued attacks by all parties on civilian objects must stop," the UN human rights chief Volker Türk said last week.

"The parties must take urgent measures to protect civilians, including by refraining from the military use of civilian objects."

His remarks followed reports that more than 50 civilians were killed within two days in separate drone attacks in North and West Kordofan. Local sources and conflict monitors attributed those specific strikes to the Sudanese military, though both warring sides face accusations of carrying out attacks that have killed civilians and damaged non-military infrastructure.

The Greater Kordofan area, made up of three states, occupies a strategically critical position. It connects the RSF-controlled Darfur region in the west to Khartoum in the eastern Nile Valley, which is currently under army control. The region’s wealth in gold and oil resources further heightens its importance in the struggle.

The war began in April 2023 following a power struggle between the leaders of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF. Fighting intensified in Kordofan after the army retook Khartoum last year, turning the resource-rich region into a pivotal new front line in a conflict that continues to devastate the country.
