Antonio Guterres Names Pekka Haavisto as Personal Envoy for Sudan
(MENAFN) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday appointed Pekka Haavisto of Finland as his new personal envoy for Sudan, according to reports.
Haavisto takes over from Ramtane Lamamra of Algeria, whom Guterres “is grateful for his dedication and commitment to peace efforts in Sudan,” the statement said.
Haavisto brings extensive experience in politics and international affairs, having served as Finland’s foreign minister from 2019 to 2023 and currently holding a seat in the Finnish parliament.
“The new Personal Envoy has broad experience in mediation and negotiation processes in the Horn of Africa region and in the Middle East,” the statement added.
Highlighting his previous UN-related work, the statement noted that Haavisto “served as the European Union’s Special Representative for the Sudan, taking part in the Darfur peace negotiations,” from 2005 to 2007.
Sudan has been engulfed in violent clashes between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces since April 2023, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths, the displacement of 13 million people, and one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises, according to reports.
