Poland Detains Montenegrin Suspect for Alleged Chinese Espionage

(MENAFN) Polish authorities detained a 32-year-old Montenegrin at Warsaw Chopin Airport on suspicion of spying for China, as stated by reports.

The arrest was carried out by officers from Poland’s Central Bureau of Investigation. The suspect was wanted under a European Arrest Warrant requested by Lithuanian judicial authorities, who allege he was working on behalf of Chinese intelligence services.

Lithuania has repeatedly warned in recent years about rising intelligence activities from China, Russia, and Belarus in the Baltic region.

Polish officials confirmed the suspect will face judicial proceedings under the extradition agreement between EU member states, though details of the alleged espionage remain undisclosed due to the investigation’s sensitivity.

The case occurs amid heightened counter-espionage measures in Poland, which has strengthened security operations since 2022. While Chinese intelligence cases have been less frequent in Poland, authorities in Central and Eastern Europe have increasingly expressed concern about Beijing’s interest in sensitive technologies, infrastructure, and political influence.

Poland’s strategic position as a logistical hub for military and humanitarian support to Ukraine, along with its proximity to Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave and Belarus, makes it a significant focus for intelligence activity, according to security officials.
