Putin Holds Talks with Vietnam's Foreign Minister at Kremlin

(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin hosted Vietnamese Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung at the Kremlin on Tuesday, using the high-profile meeting to trumpet strengthening bilateral relations between Moscow and Hanoi.

Opening the talks, Putin struck an upbeat tone on the state of the two nations' partnership.

"Our bilateral relations are developing positively, trade turnover is growing. We have a substantive, open dialogue in all areas, including the political component," he said.

The Russian leader also revealed that during a recent telephone call with Vietnamese General Secretary To Lam, he "congratulated him on his re-election to the post of General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam."

"We see that the work carried out by the entire Vietnamese leadership and the General Secretary enjoys the support of the Vietnamese people. We are happy about all your successes," Putin stressed.

Trung, dispatched to Moscow in an official capacity as a special envoy, underscored the symbolic weight of his visit.

"For the first time, the General Secretary of the Central Committee is sending a special envoy to the Russian Federation to inform about the results of the (party's) 14th Congress. This shows the special attention paid to our traditionally friendly relations," he said.

The Vietnamese foreign minister went on to credit Russia with achieving notable progress, citing high results "in socio-economic development, ensuring national defense, as well as securing an important role and position on the international arena."

"It is very important for us that our bilateral relations are developing very well, we have good political trust between our countries, and our relations are developing in all directions," Trung noted.

He further affirmed that both the party and the state regard ties with Russia as carrying strategic weight and long-term significance.

Prior to the Kremlin sit-down, Trung held separate meetings with a number of senior Russian officials and lawmakers earlier in the day — underscoring the breadth of Hanoi's diplomatic engagement during the visit.
