G7 Leaders Reaffirm Support For Ukraine In Its War With Russia
Paris: Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) reaffirmed Tuesday their enduring support for Ukraine in its war with Russia. Their move marks the fourth anniversary of the military operation Moscow launched in the territory of its neighbor.
In a statement, the leaders expressed their unwavering support for US President Donald Trump's efforts to achieve these objectives by initiating a peace process and calling on the parties to engage in direct talks.
They noted the leading role Europe plays in this process, alongside the engagement of other partners, clarifying that Ukraine and Russia alone can reach a peace deal through negotiations conducted in good faith.
During a meeting of the United Nations convened at its Geneva office to mark the fourth anniversary of the Russia-Ukraine war, ten nations, mostly Western, including France, Britain, Canada, Japan, and Peru, expressed their support for Ukraine.
They stressed that this war has violated all principles enshrined in the UN Charter, while Russia and Spain presented different justifications for dispatching troops to neighboring territories, focusing primarily on the criticality of disarmament in Ukraine and responding to NATO's eastward expansion led by the United States in the years following the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged his country's allies to continue their support at a time when a standoff was brewing among European partners over a new package of sanctions against Moscow.
The Russia-Ukraine war has entered its fifth year, and neither multiple mediation efforts led by numerous capitals nor US pressure on Ukraine has succeeded in stopping the war machine that continues to fuel the conflict between the two countries.
