European Parliament Pauses EU-US Trade Deal Amid Trump Tariff Threats
(MENAFN) The European Parliament on Monday halted its work on approving the EU-US trade agreement following renewed tariff threats by US President Donald Trump.
Bernd Lange, chair of the parliament’s trade committee, announced on the social media platform X that work on the deal would be paused until further notice.
"Now official: EP work on EU-US deal is on hold until further notice! Our negotiating team just decided to put on hold @ep_trade legal implementation of Turnberry deal&postone vote foreseen for tomorrow," he wrote.
Lange emphasized that additional clarity and legal certainty were necessary before any further action could be taken.
The decision comes days after Trump intensified his tariff campaign by threatening to increase a previously announced 10% global tariff to 15%, despite the Supreme Court ruling against his earlier tariff measures.
Trump also warned that steeper tariffs could be imposed on countries that “play games” following the court’s verdict.
