Attack in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor Province Claims Life of Syrian Soldier

(MENAFN) A Syrian soldier lost his life early Tuesday in an assault by unidentified gunmen in the eastern province of Deir ez-Zor, a state news agency reported.

The attackers targeted the army headquarters in the city of Mayadin, the report added.

No organization has claimed responsibility, and officials have not released additional information regarding the circumstances of the incident.

The attack follows a deadly assault on Monday, when four Syrian security personnel were killed by the ISIS (Daesh) terrorist group at a checkpoint west of Raqqa, the Interior Ministry said.

ISIS sleeper cells continue to operate in the region, which the group seized in 2014 before being ousted three years later by a US-led international coalition.

Control of the area later shifted to the YPG/SDF terror group, until the Syrian Army recently reasserted its presence in the region.
