(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA))
MANAMA, Feb 23 (KUNA) - Bahraini Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani reaffirmed on Monday his country's committing to upholding human rights and fundamental freedoms.
Dr. Al-Zayani made this remark in his speech at the inaugural session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, which was held through videoconferencing and attended also by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk.
Bahrain's commitment to human rights is shown through initiatives such as adopting alternative sanctions and measures, which mark an important shift in the country's approach to punishment towards individual reform, he clarified.
He also highlighted the ongoing open prisons program, which helps rehabilitate offenders and reintegrate them into society.
He added that the Kingdom has maintained its Tier 1 ranking in the US Department of State's Trafficking in Persons Report for the eighth consecutive year.
He noted recent amendments to the Press, Printing and Publishing Law, which brought significant improvements in human rights, including the abolition of prison sentences for journalists in publication cases, regulation of digital media, ensuring legal and professional protection for journalists, and promoting responsible press freedom under the rule of law.
Dr. Al Zayani reiterated Bahrain's commitment to tolerance, coexistence, and human solidarity as central to its foreign policy.
He expressed pride that the UN General Assembly adopted the Kingdom's initiative to mark January 28 as the International Day of Peaceful Coexistence, promoting peace, dialogue, and tolerance, and showcasing Bahrain's leading example of religious and cultural coexistence worldwide.
He emphasized Bahrain's commitment to diplomacy and peaceful conflict resolution, noting the country's membership in the Board of Peace.
He reiterated the Kingdom's support for the Palestinian cause and its pursuit of a just, comprehensive, and lasting peace, including implementing the peace plan for Gaza put forward by President of the United States of America Donald Trump. (end)
