Sri Lanka Launches Plan to Promote Mattala Airport as Tourism Gateway

(MENAFN) Sri Lanka is implementing a coordinated marketing and operational strategy to attract airlines to Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport, with the goal of establishing it as a key entry point for tourists, according to reports citing a senior tourism official.

Buddhika Hewawasam, chairman of the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, said the airport’s main challenge is the limited number of scheduled flights, although charter services operate during peak travel periods. He noted that Sri Lanka Tourism is collaborating with Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Ltd. and industry partners to promote the facility.

Hewawasam highlighted that Mattala could function as an alternative airport to Bandaranaike International Airport and pointed out that recent actions by aviation authorities have boosted confidence in its safety and operational standards.

He added that officials also intend to market the airport by emphasizing its proximity to southern and eastern tourist regions.
