Madagascar’s Death of Cyclone Gezani Toll Surge to Fifty-Nine
(MENAFN) The catastrophic human cost of Cyclone Gezani continued to mount Monday as Madagascar's death toll surged to 59, with 804 people reported injured, according to a fresh update from the National Office for Risk and Disaster Management (BNGRC).
The BNGRC confirmed that more than 420,000 people have been impacted across 25 districts spanning five regions in eastern and central Madagascar — a staggering scale of destruction that has left tens of thousands homeless. Over 49,000 homes sustained damage, while more than 25,000 others were entirely demolished by the storm's ferocity.
Emergency relief efforts remain active on the ground as authorities press forward with damage assessments and aid distribution to devastated communities.
The sheer magnitude of the crisis prompted the Malagasy government to formally declare a "state of national disaster" on Feb. 11, signaling an urgent, coordinated national response to the cyclone's sweeping destruction.
