Venezuelan Interim President Calls New Amnesty Law a Step Toward Peace
(MENAFN) Venezuela’s interim President Delcy Rodriguez highlighted the landmark importance of the newly passed Law of Amnesty for Democratic Coexistence, portraying it as a measure to foster peace and reconciliation after years of political turmoil.
“Alongside the political sectors, I signed the Amnesty Law for Democratic Coexistence, unanimously approved in the National Assembly; opening the door for Venezuela to reunite and coexist in peace and tolerance, with human rights, respect, and understanding at its core,” Rodriguez said on Thursday.
The law seeks to provide amnesty to individuals prosecuted or convicted for political crimes since 1999, while specifically excluding those involved in serious offenses such as armed insurrections or crimes against the state.
“This legal instrument is hope for the country. We are beginning a new stage of peace, recognition, and coexistence among all Venezuelans, guaranteeing the future of our children and young people,” she added.
The announcement follows a period of heightened tensions, including the US capture of President Nicolas Maduro on Jan. 3, subsequent reforms to the nation’s main oil law, and the release of certain political detainees.
