5.9-Magnitude Quake Hits Papua New Guinea's Coastal Madang

(MENAFN) A significant 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck the Papua New Guinea region Saturday, the German Research Centre for Geosciences confirmed, sending tremors through the coastal city of Madang, capital of Madang province.

The quake hit at 0618 GMT, with its epicenter pinpointed at 5.34 degrees south latitude and 145.75 degrees east longitude, at a surface depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles). However, seismic data indicated the earthquake actually ruptured at a considerably greater intermediate depth of 78 kilometers (48 miles) beneath the epicenter.

Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency recorded a slightly higher magnitude of 6.1, reflecting the marginal variance common between international monitoring bodies in the immediate aftermath of seismic events.

As of the time of reporting, no casualties or infrastructure damage had been confirmed.
