Google Deepmind Predicts That AI Will Reach Human Capacity In A Maximum Of 8 Years
Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis predicted on Wednesday in New Delhi that general artificial intelligence will arrive within five to eight years.
“We are between 5 and 8 years away from achieving artificial intelligence that can reason in a similar way to humans,” said the executive, describing the rapid evolution of this technology during his speech at the AI Impact Summit 2026 in India.
To achieve this, the expert proposed a new evaluation standard called the“Einstein Test,” which seeks to determine whether a machine has the capacity for autonomous scientific innovation beyond the imitation of accumulated data.
“The concept consists of training an AI with all human information, but cutting off the data in 1911,” explained the expert during his speech at the AI Impact Summit 2026, which brings together hundreds of leaders from the world of technology in the Asian country.
The challenge posed by Hassabis is to see if the algorithm is capable of inventing General Relativity on its own, as Albert Einstein did in 1915.
The head of Google's artificial intelligenc division warned that current tools act like encyclopedic experts, but still lack a real creative dimension.
“They only solve what already exists and do not generate new scientific hypotheses of that caliber,” the executive emphasized when describing the limitations of current massive language systems.
The roadmap to achieving this goal requires combining the planning capabilities of systems such as AlphaGo with the processing scale of modern foundational models.
Hassabis emphasized that models such as Gemini will be a critical part of the ultimate solution, serving as a map of how the world works on which to perform advanced learning tasks.
This transition would allow artificial intelligence to move beyond being a very fast encyclopedia to becoming an engine of discovery capable of solving mysteries that have eluded the human mind.
The AI Impact Summit 2026, the largest AI summit to date, is intended as a forum for defining the balance between extreme innovation and the safety of citizens on a global scale.
The meeting brings together more than 20 heads of state and 500 leaders from the technology industry in the Indian capital, with the aim of agreeing on the rules that will govern the digital economy for the next decade.
