Death Toll from Passage Vessel in Philippines Rises to Sixty-Two
(MENAFN) The number of fatalities from the sinking of a passenger vessel in the Philippines has climbed to 62 after four additional bodies were recovered, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported Tuesday.
“With this development, the total number of fatalities has increased to 62, with 293 survivors, while 17 individuals remain missing,” the PCG stated on its official Facebook page.
The M/V Trisha Kerstin 3 was traveling to Jolo Island in Sulu province when it capsized off Baluk-Baluk Island in Basilan province. The vessel had sent out a distress signal around 1:50 a.m. (1750 GMT) on January 25, roughly four hours after departing from the Port of Zamboanga in Mindanao.
Maritime accidents are a frequent hazard in the Philippines, an archipelago of more than 7,000 islands. Overcrowding and lax enforcement of safety regulations are often cited as contributing factors in deadly ferry incidents.
