Ten Skiers Missing as Avalanche Hits California's Sierra Nevada
(MENAFN) Up to 10 skiers were unaccounted for Tuesday after an avalanche tore through a backcountry slope in California's Sierra Nevada amid heavy snowfall, authorities said.
At least six members of the group survived the slide and remained at the scene, the Nevada County Sheriff's Office confirmed.
The party — comprising four guides and 12 clients — was traversing the Castle Peak area near Truckee when the avalanche struck, leaving rescuers racing against deteriorating weather conditions to locate survivors.
Search and rescue teams were actively deployed as of Tuesday, with deep snow accumulation and poor visibility significantly hampering efforts to reach the affected area and account for all missing individuals.
