US Carries Out Secret Deportations of Migrants to Cameroon
(MENAFN) The United States has carried out covert deportations of migrants to Cameroon, including individuals with no connection to the Central African country and some who were legally protected from removal, according to reports.
Eight migrants were reported to have arrived in Yaounde, Cameroon’s capital, on Monday. This follows earlier flights in January, when nine other migrants were transported under what officials described as a third-country deportation program, as stated by reports citing legal representatives.
None of those deported hold Cameroonian citizenship, and several reportedly had protection orders from US immigration judges due to fears of persecution in their countries of origin.
Earlier reporting indicated that the January group was flown from Louisiana to Cameroon without prior knowledge of their destination. Upon boarding, they were reportedly placed in handcuffs and shackles aboard a US Department of Homeland Security aircraft.
No public agreement appears to exist between Washington and Cameroon regarding the acceptance of deportees from other nations, and the Cameroonian authorities have yet to provide any comment on the arrivals.
