European Leaders Call for Stronger Deterrence Over Ongoing Russian Threat
(MENAFN) European officials warned on Saturday that Russia continues to pose a long-term threat to Europe, emphasizing the need for stronger deterrence measures and sustained military support for Ukraine, as well as accelerated defense investment. The remarks came during discussions at the Munich Security Conference.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen highlighted that Moscow shows no interest in pursuing peace.
“Russia will not change … they are not interested in peace,” she said, stressing that the Western alliance must respond decisively.
Frederiksen noted that Europe faces multiple simultaneous security challenges, explaining: “We have an eastern flank … a southern flank … a northern flank … and a flank when it comes to new technologies.”
She expressed concern that current defense spending may be insufficient. “Now we spend 3.5% of our GDP in Denmark on defense. I’m not sure it will be enough,” Frederiksen said, adding that long-term targets set for future decades could be too slow to address immediate threats.
She also firmly rejected any notion of negotiating territorial concessions over Greenland, stating: “If one NATO country attacks another NATO country, then NATO ends. It’s game over.”
