Azerbaijan Sets Condition to Sign Peace Treaty with Armenia
(MENAFN) Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev declared on Friday in Germany that Baku is ready to endorse a definitive peace agreement with Armenia "the very next day" after Yerevan enacts constitutional modifications to eliminate territorial claims against Azerbaijan.
"Our position has been communicated to the Armenian side for many years: the necessary amendments must be made to the Armenian Constitution," Aliyev told Azerbaijani journalists during the Munich Security Conference. "Once these amendments are adopted, we can sign a peace treaty the very next day."
The Azerbaijani president highlighted that peace has already been largely realized following a summit in Washington last August. He pointed out that the initialing of the peace accord and the endorsement of the Joint Declaration, facilitated by US President Donald Trump, represent a practical conclusion to the decades-long dispute.
Aliyev further explained that the formal completion of the process hinges entirely on Armenia’s domestic legal procedures. He stressed that Baku does not perceive this requirement as meddling in internal affairs, but rather as an essential step to prevent any future Armenian administration from reviving claims over Azerbaijani territory.
