US Keeps B-2 Bombers on High Alert Amid Middle East Military Buildup

(MENAFN) The United States has intensified its military posture in the Middle East, keeping B-2 stealth bombers and other long-range aircraft at a heightened level of readiness amid ongoing tensions with Iran, according to reports.

Citing a senior US official who spoke anonymously, reports indicate that the Pentagon raised the alert status of the bombers nearly a month ago. Although stationed within the United States, the aircraft are capable of carrying out long-distance missions, including potential strikes on Iranian nuclear or ballistic missile facilities, should diplomatic efforts collapse.

President Donald Trump previously cautioned that Washington could resort to military action if Tehran declined to limit its nuclear activities. However, senior national security advisers reportedly recommended postponing any immediate move until American forces in the region were better prepared both offensively and defensively.

Currently, between 30,000 and 40,000 US troops are deployed across the Middle East, including personnel stationed at eight permanent bases. Reports suggest that many of these forces initially lacked sufficient air defense systems to shield them from potential retaliatory strikes.

At sea, the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier heads a strike group that includes three warships armed with Tomahawk missiles. This naval formation, consisting of roughly a dozen vessels, is spread across key waterways such as the Arabian Sea, the Persian Gulf, the Red Sea and the eastern Mediterranean.

The carrier’s onboard aircraft — including stealth F-35 jets and F/A-18 attack planes — are positioned within operational range of targets inside Iran. In addition, more than a dozen F-15E strike aircraft have reportedly been deployed to the region to reinforce US airpower.
