Switzerland to Hold Critical Referendum on 10M Population Cap
(MENAFN) Switzerland will hold a critical referendum on June 14 addressing a controversial population ceiling and modifications to its civilian service legislation, the Swiss Federal Council announced.
Wednesday's government statement revealed voters will decide on the popular initiative "No to ten million Switzerland!" alongside proposed reforms to the civilian service act.
The ballot measure, championed by the right-wing Swiss People's Party, stipulates that Switzerland's permanent resident population "must not exceed 10 million people before 2050." Following that deadline, the Federal Council would gain authority to adjust the cap yearly based on natural population growth.
Under the proposal's framework, both federal and cantonal governments would be mandated to implement policies ensuring sustainable demographic development—encompassing environmental conservation and the preservation of infrastructure and social welfare systems.
The initiative establishes a trigger mechanism: should the nation's population surpass 9.5 million prior to 2050, lawmakers and government officials must intervene immediately, with particular focus on asylum policies and family reunification protocols.
